The English Riviera

Apart from our immediate neighbourhood of Wellswood (click here for lots more details about Wellswood), The English Riviera has lots to offer visitors on short breaks or longer stays at all times of the year. The area is made up of the three towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham but also includes Babbacombe and St Marychurch.

There are dozens of attractions that stay open all year so a winter break can be as equally enjoyable as a summer break. Here is a selection of some the best things to do on The English Riviera.

Paignton Zoo

This attraction is about a twenty minute drive from The Muntham Apartments and is enough to fill a whole day. There is a lot of walking involved and is mainly in the open air. This is a wonderful experience for all ages and you get to learn about the immense conservation work the zoo is involved with in terms of protecting endangered species. Apart from driving to Paignton Zoo it is possible to get a bus there. Bus number 22 goes there which you can catch from a bus stop 5 minutes from the apartments. Click here for more details

Babbacombe Model Village

Actually located close to the centre of St Marychurch, this charming attraction is something of an institution. It is a five minute drive from The Muntham Apartments but can also be accessed by buses 11,22 and 32 which can be caught from stops five minutes' walk from the apartments. Spread across 4 acres, there is an ever changing miniature World with some unexpected twists. Click here for more details.

 

Bygones

Another attraction located in St Marychurch, this places was just made for rainy afternoons. Stuffed full of curiosities, this is a place to while away the hours. Click here for more details.

Torquay Museum

Another attraction which is just a five minute drive from The Muntham Apartments, this can also be reached with buses 11,22,32 (heading in the Torquay harbour direction). The museum has exhibitions that change throughout the year and the country's only dedicated Agatha Christie exhibition. Click here for more details.

Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boats

The steam railway operates from Paignton station (it is possible to get bus 22 to Paignton station) and takes passengers through beautiful countryside to Kingswear from where it is possible to cross the river and visit the exquisite town of Dartmouth. Rail services operate all year although the timetable is reduced in the winter months. The company also operates ferry boat services from Torquay as well as river boats that can take passengers up the majestic River Dart to Totnes. Living Coasts

This is a zoo specialising in the wildlife that lives is and around coastal habitats. Part of the same trust that owns Paignton and Newquay zoos it is heavily involved in conservation. Living Coasts is located on Torquay harbourside. There is parking right next to the attraction but it can also be reached using the bus services that run in the direction of Torquay harbour and which are but a five minute walk from The Muntham Apartments.
