Places of Interest in Wellswood

Just a few steps from The Muntham Apartments are some wonderful places to explore.

Kent's Cavern

These prehistoric Caves are just a ten minute walk from the Muntham Apartments and Town House. They are of international importance as they are where the evidence of the earliest human life in northern Europe have been found.

Each day there are tours of the caves and so it is best too book in advance rather than just turning up.

There is a cafe and toilets at the Caves.

English Riviera

Ansty's Cove

This little cove is just a ten to fifteen minute walk from the Muntham Apartments and Town House. There is a steep path down to the cove and so a reasonable level of fittness is required to visit it. At the bottom you will find a small rocky beach plus a fantastic beach cafe on a wide concrete sun terrace which is open from Easter through to the end of September. There are toliets at the bottom.

St Matthias Church in Wellswood, Torquay

St Matthias's Church

This Victorian Church remains firmly at the heart of life in Wellswood and aside from the usual baptisms, weddings and funerals has a nursey attached to it too. It is just a five minute walk from the Muntham Apartments and Town House and they are therefore ideal as a place to stay or anyone attending a particular event at the church.

The Snellgrove Memorial

This memorial named after the founder of the forerunner to Debenhams now serves as a memorial to some of the most notable residents of the area over the years.

These include Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the famous engineer, who brought railways to the West Country and who briefly resided in Wellswood and who was building a mansion for himself just outside St Marychurch when he died.

Also commemorated are writers Beverly Nichols and Eden Phillpotts.
