Wellswood is a very special residential area of Torquay close to the town centre and harbour. It has a wonderful old world feel with lots of independent shops and traders at its heart in Ilsham Road hence its description as "Wellswood Village". It has a strong community spirit and every winter a street party is held in the run up to Christmas.
Just a five minute walk from The Muntham Apartments brings you first to the Church of St Matthias. This Church of England gem is a vibrant and lively place of worship and centre for the community. It also means that The Muntham Apartments are ideally placed for anyone attending the church for christenings, weddings and concerts etc.
A short distance from the church guests can find The Kents pub. This lovely pub has very reasonably priced food, a delightful garden and it is a relaxed and friendly venue.
Moving further down Ilsham Road there is a newly opened delicatessen Me and Mrs Jones which has a splendid range of local artisan cheeses and other local produce. It also has a cafe, a section of which is dog friendly.
Wellswood has two estate agents. The first of these is the newly opened Absolute Estate Agency and this is a good place to begin a possible search for a new home by the sea.
Wellswood also has two beauty salons and spas as well as a number of hairdressers. The first of these is The Sanctuary.
The second of the beauty spas is the House of Beauty. Both of these establishments are very busy and it is advisable to book some way in advance as weekends in particular can get booked up.
Wellswood has a number of dining venues including the wonderfully eccentric Ilshams Vintage Tea Room. This small cafe is open all day and serves incredibly good value for money food.
Another highlight of Wellswood is Wellies. This wine bar/brasserie is incredibly popular with locals and visitors alike. Apart from their main menu, there are specials available every day. Normally, Wellies has a live music night each week. Wellies is also dog friendly.
Complimenting the other food outlets in the road is Naughty But Nice a patisserie.
For any other food or drink items that visitors might need in a self catering apartment such as those at Muntham, there is a good local mini supermarket which is open from 7am to 11pm each day.
Slightly further down from here is another bistro, The Waddling Duck. This sweet little restaurant has super food, wonderful service and is a little quieter than its counterpart up the road.
Some visitors to the English Riviera come with the prospect of moving to the area in mind whilst others fall in love with Torquay and begin to think seriously of moving. Wellswood is home to one of Torquay's leading estate agents John Couch.
Once you have left the shops and moved down Ilsham Road you will shortly encounter Kent's Cavern on the right hand side. This pre-historic site is of International importance as it was home to the earliest human remains found anywhere in northern Europe.
Moving further down Ilsham Road, a five or six minute walk will lead guests to the wonderful Ilsham Green. This grassy expanse leads straight down to the sea.
And so within about fifteen minutes, guests of The Muntham Apartments can find themselves at Meadfoot Beach where Agatha Christie once used to swim. Today the western end of the beach there is The Meadfoot Beach Cafe which is open seasonally and it is home to a variety of watersports. The western end of the bay has a fine shingle beach whilst the eastern end is rocky.
